Devin,
Surveying students to determine the most unwelcoming part of school is an awesome idea. So glad you shared. I also think compliments are powerful - spending time everyday to say something nice to a student will help the culture.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Devin,

I really liked that you thought about a school-wide welcome plan for the school. Your ideas would impact all students and make the school a far more welcoming place. I also like the idea about changing the rules in the handbook to teaching tools. We oftentimes don't think those word choices make a big deal but they do and I would love to hear the outcome of some of your ideas.

You have some really great ideas in here, Devin! I especially love the one about asking students where the least-welcoming place is on campus. I wonder if that will bring up some teacher personality issues... :) The "teaching tools" concept for writing/revising the school handbook is great! I think we can get bogged down with writing consequences that are "appropriate" instead of zooming out to see the bigger picture of growing better people. That "no arms, no legs, no worries" video is AMAZING! My principal showed it at a staff meeting this year when many of us were feeling quite defeated with our middle-school students. I think I may actually steal your ideas to post the release of responsibility poster and your commitments. That makes such a great visual for students and for ourselves.
